MOTIVATION & INSPIRATION
By Deion Sanders with Tejado W. Hanchell, Ph. D
Today is the FIRST DAY of the rest of your life! Let me rephrase that. Today is the FIRST DAY of the BEST of your life! It doesn’t matter what yesterday was wearing or what it looked like. The only thing that matters is TODAY. Don’t get stuck in YESTERDAY…say YES TO TODAY! Today is the beginning of the PRIME of your life. You are stepping into your greatest season. (If I was you, I would shout right there just knowing that!) You are just about to hit your stride. You are about to spread your wings and fly! (I don’t know about you, but I believe you can fly!)
As long as you still have life (and you do), it means that God still has a plan for your life. So don’t look back over your shoulder and stare in the eyes of regret (unless you’re high-setppin’ with the hand behind your head). Look forward in hope. When you have hope, every day is PRIMETIME! Hope is your alarm clock – it’s what gets you up in the morning. Hope is the gas that keeps your car going. Hope is what you need to get you from where you are to where you’re going. Hope is not a name. Hope is real! You cannot lose…as long as you don’t lose hope. She is precious. You may have had some difficult days and more problems than a math book, but you have to believe that there are better days in front of you. That’s why God designed you with everything pointed forward. Your eyes and nose are not in the back of your head. Everything is designed for you to move forward. This is the PRIME of your life! And whenever you see Prime, you’re going to see Time. So you can’t be in the PRIME of your life, and not have the TIME of your life! (I feel like having church right now! I just heard a tambourine!)
Men, stay with me on this one….Your life is pregnant with possibility, and you are about to give birth. Please fellas, stay with me. I’ve got you. Don’t abort your dreams or allow your mistakes to give you a miscarriage. Life is a lot like a pregnancy. (Fellas, I need you to roll with me on this one.) When a woman finds out she is pregnant, they call her an “expectant mother.” In other words, she EXPECTS to give birth to something. When it comes to success in life, you have to expect to give birth to something. That baby is called your purpose, your dream, your goal, or your vision. When God gives you a vision, you have to expect it to come to pass. I always expected to succeed in life because even as a low-income, ignorant, li’l cocky boy growing up in Fort Myers, I knew that I was pregnant with purpose. People called me cocky, but I knew I would be great at something. But I was foolish, like Joseph. I shared my dream and they called me cocky, but all I was doing was saying what God had shown me. I knew I was pregnant with purpose, and God had a plan for me. My question to you is, “Are you pregnant yet? What are YOU expecting?” I learned a long time ago that you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you expect. Expect more, and you’ll get more.
But just like with a pregnancy, just because you expect something, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy. Ain’t nothing worth keeping that comes easy. The first part of a woman’s pregnancy is called the first trimester. That’s when she experiences unpleasant things like morning sickness. Purpose will sometimes make you sick. There’s no one who’s been successful who hasn’t had to cry (on the inside and out). Most people only see you after the baby is delivered, wrapped up, and presentable. They see the success, but hardly anyone is around when you’re kicking and screaming for an epidural! Remember that there is no success without suffering. Every person who has experienced any level of success has had to suffer for their success, and then most of them have had to suffer BECAUSE of their success. Success involves suffering. Success has a price tag. Are you really willing to pay it? You have to pay full price because success doesn’t go on sale and it’s never marked down. You don’t find success on clearance! Success involves suffering.
Not only does success involve suffering, but most women when they are pregnant they begin to crave certain foods. In other words, their appetite changes. (It sounds shallow, but I’m about to get deep right here!). When you are pregnant with purpose, your appetite has to change. You start to crave the taste of success. You’re not satisfied with where you are. You understand that you need more, and you’ll do whatever it takes (legally and morally) to get it. I challenge you to start craving success – not the stuff that comes along with success – but success itself. Too many people only want the stuff they think comes along with success. If you only want the trappings of success, you’ll get trapped by success. (Trust me, been there, done that, and wrote a book about it.) SUCCESS IS ABOUT DOING SOMETHING GREAT…NOT ABOUT BEING SOMEONE GREAT. You can do great things and be successful without your name ever being called on TV. You don’t have to be famous to be great. Some of the greatest people on earth are the hidden heroes who do great things in our communities every day. People like my late Pop Warner football coach Dave Capel and his wife, Helen, were great. They are the true definition of success.
Finally, the goal of a pregnancy is to give birth. No one wants to go through the morning sickness, the cravings, and the bloating and not have a baby to show for it. However, babies don’t just pop out on their own. Whenever a woman is ready to give birth, there is one word she can expect to hear from the doctor or her man – PUSH! YOU WILL NEVER GIVE BIRTH TO YOUR DREAMS IF YOU’RE NOT WILLING TO PUSH. Just like a baby, your dream won’t pop out on its own. You have to be willing to put in the work to make it work. It may be tough and painful, but you’ve got to push. I know you’re well beyond your due date, but it’s time for you to push. You may have been in labor for a long time, but it’s time for you to push. You may be scared and in pain, but it’s time for you to push. Nobody can push that baby out for you. Mama can’t help you. It’s time for YOU to push! Your dream is closer than you think. Your water has broken. Your dreams are fully dilated. All that’s left is for you to get in position to push. Keep pushing, and make something happen TODAY. After all, you are in the PRIME of your life! Remember what I said earlier, when you’ve in the PRIME…it’s your TIME!
